Tinuku Travel ~ Candi Gedong Songo is a ruins complex of nine groups mysterious architecture on the slopes of Mount Ungaran, Central Java. No inscription found that states about the existence of the ancient building. A theory of temples built in the early days of Hinduism in Java under the Sanjaya dynasty.

Gedong Songo temples stood scattered on the slopes of Mount Ungaran at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level and has beautiful natural scenery. The architectural style and layout is Hindu Shiva temple in the highlands or hills support the theory that the high location is heaven or the dwelling place of the gods.

The Temples proclaimed by the Governor General of British Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1740 that seven groups of buildings have been found, so Raffles refer to as Gedong Pitu or Seven Buildings. Dutch archaeologists Callenfels Van Stein (1908) and Knebel (1911) found two groups of other temples, so the name was changed Gedong Songo or Nine Buildings.

The temple consists of the building intact, relatively small size and rectangular base. Rectangular-shaped roof with outboard decorations around. In southeast looks majestic Mount Telomoyo, Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi. Archaeologists gave the name of each building as Candi Gedong I to Candi Gedong IX.



In 1928 and 1929, the Dutch government official archaeological restoration at Gedong I and Gedong II. Temple restoration and environmental management carried out by the Indonesian government in 1972 until 1982. The remaining statues are Durga, Ghanesa, Agastya, Nandiswara and Mahakala.

The cornerstone of the buildings have carved lotus motifs and tendrils simple. Shelf height of about 1 meter, with stairs leading to a small room inside the temple. Shelf surface formed about 0.5 meter-wide corridor around the body of the temple. Along the edges of the hall by a fence, but most stones have collapsed or even disappear.

Gedong Songo temples has many similarities with Dieng temples in Banjarnegara district. Temple complex lined from bottom to top of the hills and each temple apart through the path. On the sidelines between Gedong Gedong III to IV contained a bath springs with high sulfur content. The smell of sulfur is very strong and thick smoke.

Routes and public transport: If taking the bus from Yogyakarta to the Giwangan Bus Terminal to Semarang city, but down in Ambarawa city then take a bus to Gedong Songo location.
